While December is a busy and hopefully enjoyable month, it is inevitable many people will start to think about the New Year. There is a lot to be said for turning over a new leaf and making positive changes in your life at this time of year. January is often a cold and miserable month when you consider the weather, but if you are motivated, you can achieve a lot.

Some people try to improve their fitness outlook in January while others make changes that will improve their career or love-life. However, if you are looking to sell your home, or you want to love your current home more, you’ll find decluttering is an excellent activity at this time of year.

Buyers are searching in winter

You may think winter isn’t a busy time in the property market, but this isn’t the case. Yes, spring is the busiest time of year for UK property sales, but buyers are actively looking at homes in winter. Some people decide January is the perfect time to start the searching process, and in recent years, there has been an increase in the people who search for property before December is over.

Rightmove have previously stated they experience a 228% increase in page views in the week between Christmas and New Year. Zoopla have advised agents to expect an increase in website visits and leads at the end of the year. If you need motivation to declutter your home, know that buyers are actively looking for property.

The end of the festive season provides you with the perfect chance to declutter

You may be more focused on putting your Christmas tree up and enjoying the spectacle, but allow yourself to consider how your home will look when the tree comes down. A lot of people feel their home looks bare when there is no Christmas tree up, and you can use this emotion to your advantage. If the home looks different, take the opportunity to transform it, and you can do so by decluttering your home.

Some of the key reasons you should declutter your property include:

·         When a home is clean and decluttered, it allows buyers to picture themselves in the home

·         A decluttered property helps a buyer to retain focus when considering the property

·         There is more space in a decluttered property, which is attractive to buyers

·         A decluttered home comes across better in staged images, which attracts buyers to your listing

These are all hugely important reasons as to why you should declutter your home. If you receive or give a lot of gifts at Christmas, you may be keen to remove some of your older items. This is the perfect starting point for decluttering, and remember, you don’t have to throw old items in the bin. You can sell your items, you can gift them to others and you can offer them to charity.
